Orji Kalu Condemns Invasion of Justice Odili’s Residence

The Chief Whip of the Nigerian Senate, Senator Orji Uzor Kalu, on Saturday condemned the invasion of the Abuja residence of Justice Mary Odili of the Supreme Court, describing the development as cruel and unhealthy for the nation’s democracy.

The former lawmaker called for a full-blown investigation of the raid, arguing that it was capable of triggering tension in the country.

In a statement he personally signed and made available to newsmen on Saturday, he maintained that the invasion was unwarranted, no matter the reason, stressing that there was a better approach to issues rather than that show of shame that could dent the image of the nation.

Kalu insisted that the rule of law must be strictly observed in circumstances like that for the sake of national progress and development.

The lawmaker reminded security agents to take into cognizance the constitutional provisions that guide their action.

He called on the Federal Government to bring perpetrators to book, adding that unlawful invasion of a citizen’s residence is against the constitution of Nigeria and tenets of democracy.

He said, “the invasion of the residence of Justice Mary Odili of the Supreme Court in a Gestapo manner is totally condemnable and unacceptable in a democratic dispensation.

“The country’s democracy is gradually growing and as such, acts that are not in tandem with the constitution of Nigeria and democratic process must not be tolerated.

“The Federal Government should commence a robust investigation into the sad development to save the face of the country in the comity of nations and to bring the perpetrators of the unfortunate incident to book.”

According to him, the governed must be respected for them to have confidence in government and its arms.
