Six bodies have been discovered inside a train boxcar in Laredo, Texas, in what authorities described as a mysterious incident, US officials said.
The discovery was made on Sunday, May 10, when a Union Pacific worker reportedly came across the bodies at a rail yard near the Mexico border, according to Laredo Police investigator Joe Baeza.
Emergency responders who arrived at the scene confirmed that all six individuals were dead. However, authorities have not yet determined the cause of death.
A spokesperson for Union Pacific, Daryl Bjoraas, said the company was cooperating with law enforcement agencies in the ongoing investigation.
“Union Pacific is saddened by this incident and is working closely with law enforcement to investigate,” Bjoraas said.
Police said the rail yard, described as a remote logistics facility used for loading and unloading freight trains, is similar in function to a seaport cargo terminal but for rail transport.
Authorities have not released the identities, nationalities, or origins of the deceased.
Laredo Police Investigator Joe Baeza said the investigation is ongoing as officials work to determine how the individuals ended up inside the boxcar and what led to their deaths.
“We are still trying to piece together exactly what happened,” he said.
No further details have been provided at this time, and investigators say all possibilities remain under consideration.
