The Compact Service with All Nigerians (SERVICOM) denounced the dilapidated structure of some of the country’s federal unity schools.
Ms. Nnena Akajemeli, National Coordinator, SERVICOM made this position known during the presentation of the SERVICOM Conformity Assessment Report (SCER) of 34 selected federal unit schools to the Ministry of Education in Abuja on Tuesday.
Akajemeli said the purpose of the SCER was to provide feedback on operations and situations within ministries, departments and agencies (MDAs).
According to her, this is done to discover their strengths and weaknesses in order to come up with solutions.
She said that during the assessment it was observed that the floors of the hotels for men and women in some schools were in poor condition and full of deep potholes even though both hostels were well laid out and clean.
“These deep potholes pose a great threat to the lives of students living in hotels.
“The kitchen at Federal Government Girls’ Collage in Kazaure, Jigawa, for example, is in terrible shape.
“At the time of this assessment, the leaky roof, broken floor ties, and dining room chairs are old and out of date,” she said.
The SERVICOM coordinator noted that the students had complained that there was no ambulance in the college and that sick patients had to rely on another arrangement in case of emergency.
“Such a situation is risky because it can delay a rapid response to an emergency challenge,” he said.
Akajemeli therefore appealed to the Ministry of Education to save the situation, adding that SERVICOM would appreciate if the ministry could rebuild a perimeter fence in some of the schools.
In response, the Minister of State for Education, Mr. Chukwuemeka Nwajiuba, applauded SERVICOM’s services in all MDAs.
Nwajiuba said SERVICOM is an agency through which the government ensures customer satisfaction in the services it provides to its citizens.
“I want to appreciate the efforts of SERVICOM, the office of the Presidency in general, to carry out this compliance service in our schools.
“The evaluation reports will serve as a wake-up call for us as a ministry, and our ministry leadership and staff participating in this exercise.
“It will also serve as a warning to others, to create room for improvement,” he said.
Nwajiuba, however, assured the boss of SERVICOM of the ministry’s response to the assessment reports on appropriate actions to save the schools.
