Obi Iyiegbu, a socialite and the Chairman of the Cubana Group of Companies, was interrogated by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency on Thursday, January 13 for an alleged connection to the illegal narcotics business.
Ravenewsonline.com reports that Obi Cubana was interrogated for around five hours at the NDLEA’s Abuja headquarters before being given bail and told to return at a later date, Punch says
According to the magazine, three convicted drug dealers from Malaysia, Nigeria, and India put suspicious payments into Cubana’s account.
It was also learned that NDLEA and Economic and Financial Crimes Commission operatives had expanded their investigation into Cubana and his business network, based on the suspicion that he may be involved in the narcotics trade.
The source told the publication;
“Obi Cubana arrived at the NDLEA office around 9am and responded to questions for some hours before he was granted bail at 2pm. There are suspicions that he may be a drug kingpin. Some convicted drug dealers paid funds into his account.
“We have been able to establish three of such payments. One of the persons that paid money into his account was convicted in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia; another one that was convicted in New Delhi, India; also paid money into his account while a third person that was arrested at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos and convicted in 2017, also paid money into Cubana’s account.”
Cubana is likely to provide some documents to the NDLEA at their next meeting, according to reports. When Punch called Obi Cubana’s aide, Chioma Nwachukwu, she said:
Last July, the socialite, who has worked in the nightclub industry since 2006, made international headlines when he organized a grandiose funeral for his mother, Ezinne Iyiegbu, in Oba, Anambra State’s Idemili South local government area.
During a recent interview with BBC Pidgin, he revealed how he made his money. In 1999, he arrived to Abuja for his National Youth Service Corps program and served in the National Assembly, according to him.
He went into real estate and acquired a contract to equip houses, according to the 46-year-old. The celebrity went on to say that he acquired a job with the Pipelines and Product Marketing Company before moving into the hospitality industry, where he has made billions of naira.
Since then, he has opened Cubana Club outlets in five states: Imo, Lagos, Rivers, Enugu, and Abuja.
Pascal Okechukwu, also known as Cubana Chief Priest, and Emeka Okonkwo alias E-money , the Chairman of the Five Star Group, are among Obi Cubana’s colleagues who have been questioned.
