The International Migration Board (IOM) has appointed candidate from Nigeria, Ms Ugochi Daniels, to the post of Deputy Director General of Operations.
This is contained in a statement by the Director General of IOM, Mr. Antonio Vitorino.
Daniels alongside Mr. Bernardo Joaquim from Mozambique and Ms Alexandra Bilak from Azerbaijan were shortlisted from 15 candidates who vied for the post.
“Each interview followed the same process, using a similar set of questions that focused on the main areas of the organization’s programming and policy.
“Including the protection of migrants, internal displacement and the link between humanitarianism and development,” said Vitorino.
He expressed the hope that Daniels would bring to IOM her rich experience of the multilateral system, given her record of achievements in various United Nations bodies where she previously worked.
The statement further indicates that Vitorino also appointed Ms Amy Pope to the post of IOM Deputy Director General for Management and Reforms.
“I have no doubts that Ms Daniels and Ms Pope – as our two Deputy Directors General – will demonstrate effective leadership throughout their tenure, using their considerable skills in the service of Member States and in support of the millions of people whose lives depend on the organization. , as the world emerges from the global pandemic, ”Vitorino added.
It will be recalled that the Nigerian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Geoffrey Onyeama, campaigned for the appointment of Daniel following his appointment by President Muhammadu Buhari.
Daniels had previously worked in various United Nations entities, including as the United Nations Population Fund‘s (UNFPA) resident envoy to Iran.
