The Federal Ministry of Education launched a free e-learning website called ”inspire.education.gov. ng” for all levels of education to allow easy access to learning.
Education Minister Malam Adamu Adamu launched the free e-learning website in Abuja on Tuesday.
Representing Echono, the permanent secretary of the ministry, Adamu said the website would accommodate two million Nigerians at a time.
Adamu said the decision was due to COVID-19, which interrupted learning for two years.
He said that the website, started, had two characteristics: inspiring students and igniting for teachers, and said this would allow both students and teachers to have full access to the website.
He added that the ministry was collaborating with the Teacher Registration Council of Nigeria (TRCN) to allow only registered teachers to have access to the website.
The minister said that the e-learning content would cover all levels of education and said that currently the ministry focuses on primary and secondary education and will be made accessible to rural communities without internet services.
He added that the current e-learning website used by universities will not be stopped, but will be linked to the new website.
According to him, to date, the ministry has provided more than 4,000 video lessons for the basic levels, 7,000 video lessons for the secondary levels, and 4,000 audio lessons for the secondary levels.
“We have been developing content so that we can broadcast it in all media. We have radio content that covers the entire country and also television.
“We have exceeded 30 percent in terms of broadband. We are working with Galaxy Backbone to place fibers across the country and distribute them to schools across the country.
“The content is for all levels but the focus is currently on the elementary and middle school level. This is because there is hardly any in our Polytechnic or University that does not have its own.
“We do not intend to close the website for polytechnics and universities, but we want to create a link for them to access the platform,” he said.
He added that the ministry was working with Galaxy Backbone to reserve a proportion of its cyber base dedicated to electronic content.
On whether the website would be adapted to teaching in the various local languages, the minister said a committee had been set up to link with regulatory agencies to take advantage of local languages.
He congratulated local content providers and partners for their role in bringing the project to the limelight.
Therefore, he urged users to take advantage of the website and said that the ministry was working to make it perfect and inexpensive for users.
In addition, Abubakar Isah, the ministry’s Director of Information and Communication Technology (ICT), said the website would offer both teachers and students the most beneficial teaching and learning resources to teach and understand the lessons respectively.
He added that the e-learning website had also enabled states to adopt strategies for teaching.
