Arsenal suffered one of the most humiliating defeats in their history as the Premier League champions were stunned by fourth-tier minnows Fleetwood in a League Cup penalty shoot-out on Tuesday.
RaveNewsOnline reports that Fleetwood Town pulled off a stunning upset, dumping Premier League champions Arsenal out of the Carabao Cup fourth round. The fourth-tier side won 5-3 on penalties after the game finished 1-1.
Aaron Lobalu-Bi fired Fleetwood in front in the 21st minute. Viktor Gyokeres levelled for Arsenal five minutes into the second half.
Mikel Arteta had named a side made up largely of fringe players, but he turned to his big names after the break. On came Ben White, Eberechi Eze, Martin Odegaard, Ezri Konsa and Bruno Guimaraes as the Arsenal boss chased a way through.
The Gunners dominated, especially in the second half, and carved out chance after chance against stubborn Fleetwood defending. Yet all that pressure brought just a single goal, and victory inside 90 minutes never came.
Fleetwood, meanwhile, reached the fourth round for the first time in their history. The fourth-tier club earned their place by shocking Championship side Sheffield United 1-0
