Mrs. Olubunmi Kuku, Managing Director of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), has restated the agency’s firm commitment to enforcing a cashless payment system at all airport payment points nationwide, starting February 28, 2026.
The declaration followed a meeting with executives and members of the National Union of Air Transport Employees (NUATE), who visited FAAN headquarters seeking details on the cash transaction ban.
FAAN’s Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, Mr. Henry Agbebire, in a statement, described the session as a platform for frank discussions, underscoring FAAN’s open-door policy and dedication to stakeholder involvement.
Mrs. Kuku, during the engagement, stressed that the cashless shift mirrors global aviation standards and complies with Federal Government instructions to boost transparency, accountability, and efficiency.
She cited a November 24, 2025, Treasury Circular from the Office of the Accountant General of the Federation, signed by Accountant-General Shamseldeen Ogunjimi, which mandates MDAs to halt cash dealings following Federal Executive Council approval.
“There is no going back,” Kuku declared, noting the policy integrates FAAN into Nigeria’s financial reforms, enhancing airport integrity, service quality, and revenue protection.
Stakeholder Buy-In, Paystack Clarification
Kuku positioned the reform within FAAN’s strategy to promote transparency, trust, and collaboration with unions, concessionaires, and service providers.
FAAN’s proactive dialogue with NUATE exemplifies how reforms pair with partnerships, she added.
Beyond policy adherence, Kuku outlined cashless benefits: curbed leakages, traceable transactions, quicker services, and heightened public trust in aviation operations.
On concerns over Paystack’s role, she explained it acts solely as a payment gateway; all funds flow directly from PoS terminals to government accounts, bypassing any third-party retention.
The union received a full briefing on transition plans ahead of the deadline. NUATE members endorsed the framework as feasible and practical.
This initiative advances FAAN’s modernisation drive, bolstering accountability and stakeholder ties in Nigeria’s aviation sector.
