Lagos Govt Denies Involvement in FESTAC Demolitions

Lagos State Government has distanced itself from the recent demolition of structures on Sixth Avenue, FESTAC Town, stating categorically that the exercise was not authorized by the state.

The Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Dr. Oluyinka Olumide, made this known on Tuesday during a press briefing at the Ministry’s headquarters in Alausa, Ikeja.

Olumide emphasized that the state government had no hand in the demolitions and reiterated Lagos’ commitment to due process and the protection of property rights.

“We want to assure residents that the Lagos State Government is committed to fairness, due process, and the protection of property rights,” he said. “Any demolition done without proper authorization does not represent the position of this administration.”

The Commissioner explained that Lagos State follows a transparent and regulated procedure before any structure is brought down. This includes the issuance of all necessary statutory notices and engagement with affected stakeholders.

He further urged all agencies, including federal institutions operating within the state, to seek clearance from the Ministry of Physical Planning and Urban Development before embarking on any demolition activities.

“Consultation and coordination are essential to avoid unnecessary hardship and ensure that all actions align with the state’s urban development policies,” Olumide added.

The clarification comes amid public outcry and confusion over the legality of the demolitions, which reportedly affected several residential and commercial properties in the FESTAC area.
