Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria, FAAN, has reopened the 3.9km 18R/36L runway at Murtala Muhammed International Airport, MMA, Lagos.

The runway, closed in April 2023 for an eight-week maintenance, faced delays that stretched its closure to almost a year.

Managing Director of FAAN, Mrs Olubunmi Kuku, had said the runway could be reopened sooner than expected.

Kuku, who said efforts were underway to enable its operation, urged the Nigeria Airspace Management Agency, NAMA, to expedite the reopening process.

As a result, FAAN engaged with Airline Operators of Nigeria, AON, and the NCAA to ensure that reopening was quickened.

“We are working closely with the contractor. With the support of the minister and permanent secretary, we are aiming for a swift reopening,” She had said.

Welcomed with a water cannon salute, Kenya Airways has landed on the runway marking its return to service.
