Dr. ‘Bosun Tijani has been named as the new Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy in the President Bola Tinubu-led administration, according to the ministerial list released on Wednesday.

The CcHub founder and CEO was nominated as a ministerial nominee some days ago and he successfully scaled through a gruelling ministerial screening session before being named as the Minister.

Dr Tijani is known for his involvement in the Nigerian tech ecosystem and his efforts to promote innovation and entrepreneurship in Africa.

He played a significant role in establishing CcHub as a prominent hub for technology and innovation in Nigeria, supporting numerous startups and fostering the growth of the local tech community.

With Tijani at the helm, CcHUB achieved notable progress. In 2019, the entity purchased Kenya’s iHub and established the CcHUB Design Lab in Kigali, Rwanda. Illustrating his dedication to growth, Tijani further expanded CcHUB’s influence across Africa’s southern region by launching CcHUB Namibia, a significant technological centre in Windhoek, Namibia, in 2023.

He will be taking over from Professor Isa Ali Ibrahim, the former Minister of Communications and Digital Economy who served in the President Buhari-led administration from 2019 – 2023.

Before this administration, the ministry was just known as the Ministry of Communications and Digital Economy created to foster a knowledge based economy and information society in Nigeria. It was created to facilitate ICT as a key tool in the transformation agenda for Nigeria in the areas of job creation, economic growth and transparency of governance.

With Innovation added to the portfolio, the Ministry name will change again. It will be interesting to know what this would entail in the new organisation.
