FG postpones National Population Census to May 2023

CENSUS

Federal Government of Nigeria has announced that the national population and housing census earlier scheduled for March 29 – April 1, 2023, has now been shifted to May 2023 for logistics reasons.

This new development was disclosed to newsmen by the Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, on Wednesday, March 15, 2023, after the weekly meeting of the Federal Executive Council presided over by President Muhammadu Buhari.

According to the Minister, the decision to move the date was primarily due to the rescheduling of the Gubernatorial and State House of Assembly elections to March 18, 2023.

He also disclosed that the Council had approved the sum of N2.8 billion for the National Population Commission (NPC) to procure some software to be used for the conduct of the census.

“There was a memo presented by the National Population Commission, seeking for some software to allow them conduct the census in May this year. I believe because of the rescheduling of the elections, they cannot commence the census as scheduled.

“They sought Council’s approval for a contract to procure software for the census at the sum of N2.8 billion,” he stated.
