Why The Atlas Lions Of Morocco Stand A Chance Of Becoming The First African Country To Finish Third In A World Cup

The Moroccan team have already cemented their name in World Cup history, and a win or loss will not erase what the team has accomplished in Qatar 2022 FIFA World Cup. Going into the tournament, which started on November 20, 2022, the Atlas Lions of Morocco were not among the countries expected to make an impact.

The Walid Regragui-led Morocco team beat Belgium, Spain and Portugal to make it into the semi-finals.

Though Morocco’s dream of making it into the finals was squash in the semi-finals when they lost 2-0 to France, the team will face Croatia for the second time in the tournament for third place. The first encounter ended in a goalless draw, but both teams will slug it out again on Saturday, December 17, 2022, with Morocco standing a chance to become the first African country to finish third in a World Cup.

The much-anticipated match between Croatia and Morocco at the  Khalifa International Stadium will be live on World Cup Central, DStv channel 202.

So far in the tournament, both teams have displayed an incredible level of footballing masterpieces and surprises. In the group stage, Morocco stunned Belgium with a 2-0 win and made history as the first African team to make it into the Round of Four after beating Ronaldo’s Portugal.

As the teams take to the pitch on Saturday, fans can expect a closely contested match.

Croatia has made it into the Semi-Finals three times since their debut in 1998. While the Croatians finished second in the last world cup in Russia, the team led by captain Luka Modric will put up a fight against the Atlas Lions to get a medal in the tournament.

With 23 goals in 161 international appearances for Croatia, Modric might be playing his last World Cup game as the Real Madrid veteran midfielder turned 37 years less than two months before the World Cup Started.

However, having made it to this point, Morocco will be looking to build on their strong showing in the World Cup and edge a win over Croatia, which will be widely celebrated in Africa.

While promising to give some of his players who have not played in the tournament a chance, Morocco coach Walid Regragui said that his team will go for a win against Croatia on Saturday.

“It will be difficult on the mental level. I will give opportunities to those who did not participate, and we will try to clinch the third place.”
